[E][NDS]Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side 1st & 2nd

20121127-201613.jpg
Recently I have been casually playing a series of otome games called Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side and I wanted to share them with my friends. I think a lot of the people I interact with on here would enjoy them a lot.

They’re also “all ages” games, so I don’t feel any more creepy playing them than I do watching some super girly romance-y shoujo animu or a Korean drama or something.

Also, I really respect the people who have been creating the translation patches for doing such an amazing and thorough job. I feel like they deserve a thank you, even if it’s just a dumb blog entry. No one ever translates or localizes games like this in an official/professional sense (unless you count Princess Debut…), and they did a better job than some companies do.

But here are some screencaps to entice people into reading it. Some of these are in Japanese but the translation patches are 100% in English except for literally two graphics during a Valentine’s Day minigame that don’t even matter or impact anything.
It’s been awhile that I started the game but some otome games’ completion are hard and it’s the case for all the Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side series so I haven’t finished 2nd Season but I’ll try my best! Also, I have to redo most of the routes since I lost the Micro SD card which contained the game months ago /sobs Being on my high school senior year doesn’t help at all especially now since exams are coming soon… I guess I’ll stop complaining orz””

So far, there have been translation patches made of 2 of the games in the series: Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side: 1st Love Plus and Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side: 2nd Season.

GAME FEATURES

Time Management / High School Simulation: Best part of the game IMHO. You go through 3 (and a half, sort of) years of high school. Time is incremented into “what you’re doing this week” and then you get a Sunday off to do certain things. You can join clubs, get a part-time job, make friends with the girls in your class, go on field trips, cultural festival / sports festival, etc. You do various activities like studying or sports to raise or lower stats like Intelligence, Fitness, Arts, Style, Charm, Social, etc. There is also a stress meter to avoid filling OR ELSE YOU WILL DIE (not really). You need to raise ALL of these stats for succeeding in exams, succeeding at clubs I think, and obviously for dating purposes. Since it’s a dating sim.
Dating Simulation: The main purpose of the game. Each dude is vastly different from the others and has a different plot to follow, sort of. That is what I enjoy about that part of the game, anyway, since I can’t find myself legitimately attracted to cartoon characters… BUT they are really REALLY cute story lines and you do really become attached to most of the characters. Particularly the girl characters, if you’re me. Some of the dudes are super irritating though.
Dress Up Game lol: You go shopping for outfits and accessories to wear on dates, or out shopping. There are a lot of cute things. There are even some Lolita outfits, which makes me very giddy. :>;;;;; The Lolita swimsuits are vomit-inducingly cute. There is a “website” in the game to check for current trends and junk, too. Some clothes are for special events, like “party dresses” for Christmas parties and furisode kimono for New Year shrine visit.
You can also get endings with the girl characters!! They’re not romantic endings, but more like, “AND THEN WE WERE BEST FRIENDS FOREVER” endings which could be warped pretty easily, like the end to Madoka. My first ending ever was with the obviously lesbian Arisawa Shiho.
EVS: I don’t remember what it stands for, but it’s the system that allows the dudes in the game to say your name (or a hilarious bastardization of your name) when they talk to you. They can only say so much, though. Here is an extremely useful list of possible EVS pronunciations!!
Skinship, AKA Sexual Harassment Via Stylus: You can poke the dudes with a stylus while on dates to bother them into liking you more. You are supposed to do this a lot. I tried it on my boyfriend and it doesn’t work in real life. Also, in the second game, skinship gets srs. It is much more involved and there is even a mildly creepy minigame where you pretty much molest their face until they start screaming at you to stop touching them before they jizz themselves. These scenes usually end with the male running off in tears. It is funny and sad. Oh and also you can slap them around in 2nd Season, which is awesome.
Album of CGs, music, and endings: I actually don’t give a shit about this part at all but it’s there and I guess other people like it. The art is sometimes very very pretty. My boyfriend likes the music in the game so he played with that part for a little while.

The first game in the series. There are 8 “date-able” guys in the game. My favourite so far is Himuro, but the cutest ending I got was when I accidentally wound up with Arisawa Shiho, the obvious lesbian in this game. I was surprised in the second game to know she is still running our flower shop. i luv shiho <;;;;;3<;;;;;3<;;;;;3

Shopping is really frustrating for the 1st year in this game. I recommend getting a job IMMEDIATELY, only going to the flea market for date clothes, buying only what you absolutely need in the style you need, then getting as Jewish as possible to save up for a yukata, swimsuit, Christmas dress, and then a furisode ASAP. Those three things (especially the swimsuit and dress) are extremely important. And furisode are fucking expensive. Unless you save hard you will not get one for the first New Year. 😦

Also, skinship is pretty simple. Tapping different parts of them gets different reactions. I think it’s supposed to be like, tapping their face is more intimate than tapping their chest, or something IDK it doesn’t even make sense to be honest. Also it’s waist up only, so you’re not able to punch them in the dick. 😦

Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side 2nd Season is a dating sim edited by Konami, originally for PS2 (2nd Kiss, released in 2002) which gets a release for Nintendo DS (2nd Season) on 2007. If you had played TMGS1, you should be familiar with it, for sure! It’s kinda the same template for the plot: the heroine moved back to her hometown (Habataki City) after leaving it for years and is about to start her high school life~

PROLOGUE:
The heroine remembers a moment of her childhood: She was lost somewhere on the beach near the lighthouse and she was crying then a boy came to her and asked if she was a mermaid (lol /shot).

So here begins the story-telling of a legend (like in TMGS1): It’s the story of two people who fell in love but the girl was a mermaid who had taken an human form forbidding her to speak. When the villagers heard about this, they were against their relationship (I guess) so the mermaid had to leave and they promised they would meet again. The young man waited and waited for her to come back and one day, he decided to sail the ocean in order to find her but he never came back.

After that, the heroine and the little boy promised to meet again someday but strangely it seems that our dear heroine doesn’t remember the face of the boy so it’s hidden by a sun ray :’D … but Konami failed at hiding it though so we can guess who it is pretty quickly =_=”

END OF THE PROLOGUE

Back to present: the heroine is on that same beach because she got lost once again and notices a house next to the lighthouse from afar, she decides to go and take a look out of curiosity. When she arrives, there’s a guy dressed as a waiter by the window, she unitentionally stares at him and when she realizes it, it was so embarrassing that she decides to go away as quickly as possible but ends up being lost again at the same place, so she decides to ask for directions because the high school entrance ceremony will begin soon and if she doesn’t hurry up she’ll be late etc.. then she finds the waiter guy from earlier and asks him but he shooes her away after talking quite rudely to her.

Finally, the heroine finds her way and make it to her school: Hanegasaki Gakuen. In front of the gates she recognizes the waiter who shooed her away despite the fact that his hairstyle changed; when he sees her, the guy drag her somewhere around the school to talk. So we get to know his name: Saeki Teru (佐伯 瑛) and it appears that he’s also a first year~ Saeki tells her to keep her mouth shut about his work because he doesn’t want the others to know, she accepts and he take his leave quickly.

Before homeroom, the heroine meets one of the four girls “friends” in the corridor: Onoda Chiyomi, Toudou Tatsuko, Mizushima Hisoka or Nishimoto Haruhi (the person you meet depends of which room you chose at the begining), knowing that one of girls can be your rival depending of which guy you decide to go after (I really disliked this) =u=

After enterring classroom, the homeroom teacher introduces himself: Wakaouji Takafumi (若王子 貴文), Chemistry teacher! WAKA-SENSEI Y CHEMISTRY?! then he hands a form with questions to answer to the students before leaving~

Last, when the heroine returns home she meets her young neighbor: Otonari Yuu (音成 遊) aka the little stalker who is willing to share info with her about people anytime!

High school life can really start now ♥
______________________________

The goal of TMGS2 is roughly to go after a guy, make him love you and confess on your graduation day. In order to get this confession, you have to raise the required parameters to get his ending (Inteligence, Fitness, Style, Social etc..) by doing activities (studying, drawing, reading magazines, physical exercice etc..). Going on dates with him and getting the correct anwsers will increase his affection (Secret charas are exceptions) ~

There are 7 main guys: Saeki Teru, Hikami Itaru, Shiba Katsumi, Hariya Kounoushin (Harry), Christopher Weatherfield (Chris), Amachi Shouta (real shota), Wakaouji Takafumi (SENSEI ♥) and Masaki Motoharu.
3 secret characters: Akagi Kazuyuki, Komori Taku and Majima Tarou

Also, there’s the “accidental kiss” event: according to the answers to the 2 last questions of Waka-sensei’s questionnaire, each guy has one except secret charas as always!

Then the special feature for Nintendo DS: SKINSHIP!
Wikipedia says: “As an added feature of the Nintendo DS version, the player can touch many of the characters using the stylus causing many different responses depending on their feelings for you.”
It’s a feature that allows you to “molest” (yeah.. sorry, I suck at explaining so please bear with it :’D) the guy during dates or in CGs scenes~ (=>;;;;;;; Explained on the official website) You can poke his head, tug his arm or look at his eyes by touching them and such, it will increase affection (hearts) or friendship (stars) if you did it at the right place~ according to your affection level he might dislike it when you poke at wrong places :’D

Skinship reaches a new level of creepy in this game and now there are things like stroking, poking, zigzag lines, etc. available to molest the dudes in a much more detailed and specific manner. For example, you can draw a quick line down to chop their shoulder and listen to them call you an asshole.

Also there is a new LOVE MODE activated when you are walking home from a date and the dude likes you enough.

In Love Mode, you apparently rub your hands (or boobs) all over his face and shoulders so much that he either calls you a big nasty pervert while making a scared anime rape face, yells at you for giving him blue balls and storms away to masturbate, or — if you stop before he gets mad — nothing bad happens and he drops you off at home after asking you a question about ~*special touching*~. But you are always, ALWAYS left feeling like you just subway groped your DS. Pretty much every character says a lot of “NO STOP” and “DON’T TOUCH ME THERE” while making gaspy sex noises. I usually turn the sound off and focus on the little hearts in the minigame to avoid feeling like a rapist.

Overall, better than the first one. There are some new clubs to join, there are a lot more character interactions, and the minigames are funner. The Valentine cooking one is harder in this game because it forces you to learn 2 very simple kanji though, fair warning. It’s the only not-translated bit and it’s frustrating but easy to work around
